So, yes, I went with the safe choice of the 80GB iPod Classic. I did like the look of the 80GB Zunes, but the fact that nobody seemed to be carrying them (except Circuit City, eww) was something of a red flag. Also off-putting was the limitation in many MP3 players to only allow browsing by song title, artist, playlist, and album. To a pedantic classical music enthusiast like me, who would actually want to tag files properly, or see everything I have by Carl Nielsen, that would get irritating.

I'm about 50-60% through my collection, taking up a measly 5GB. The iPod is telling me there is about 70GB free, so there must be firmware or something making up the rest. Dark matter, perhaps?

I also used the downtime while ripping to install the new set of Eudoxas that I'd been pre-stretching on the old violin. I'm writing that here so I don't have to wonder how old the strings are and the last time I changed them.

I'm practicin' fiddlin' tunes!

Apparently, a glass of Sauvignon Blanc with dinner makes me believe I can play concerti.
av8rmike: (violin)
I worked on Nutcracker stuff for about 1.5 hours. I can do that for two more days, until the first dress rehearsal.
av8rmike: (violin)

Rep: Looking over a few of the tricky parts for tomorrow night's concert, 10 minutes.
Beethoven, Romance No. 2 without and with music, 1 hour.
Total time: 1 hour, 20 minutes.

One thing's for sure, my memory seems to have gone to hell. My lesson tomorrow is going to be even worse than last week if I can't even remember this much.
av8rmike: (violin)
Scales: F major, 3-octave, 10 minutes.

Rep: Beethoven Romance in F major, 40 minutes

av8rmike: (violin)
Scales: A major, 4-octave and arpeggios, D major, 3-octave: 10 minutes.

Also spent some time goofing off trying to play the Bruch Concerto #1, which I apparently can't.

Just because I haven't updated in a while...

Scales: D major, 3-octave and G major, 4-octave, 10 minutes.

Rep: Shostakovich Symphony #10, movements #3 and 4, and some of #2, 1 hour 40 minutes.

This is going to be a hard symphony. More on the weekend and stuff later.
av8rmike: (violin)
Scales: G major, 4-octave, 10 minutes

Rep: Shostakovich Symphony #10, mvts. 2, 1, and 4: 1 hour, 10 minutes
Total time: 1 hour, 20 minutes.

This is the last bit of practice time I'll get in before I leave on Tuesday. I'm still intending to go to rehearsal tomorrow night for the first Shostakovich read-through, even though I'll have to run home and start packing. I borrowed a big suitcase from my dad for the purpose. Except for actually putting stuff in the suitcase and whatnot, I'm about as prepared as I'm going to get.

I just sent e-mails to about half a dozen friends this morning that I haven't talked to in a while. Hopefully no one will accuse me of not trying to stay in touch with people. If you didn't get an e-mail and want one, I guess you can let me know.

Since I was busy talking to people last night after practicing, I neglected to write up a log. I spent about the entire 45 minutes trying to play through Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony, and still didn't get all the way through. It's going to be a fun couple of weeks.

Scales: G-major, 4-octave and arpeggios, 10 minutes

av8rmike: (violin)
Scales: G major, 4-octave and arpeggios, 15 mins

Rep: Too much stuff to list individually; Some Gershwin, some Beethoven, some of the Mozart Requiem, 1 hour 15 mins

Since it's Bach's birthday today, I also spent the last half hour trying to play the Chaconne. Good times...
av8rmike: (violin)
Scales: G major, 4-octave; D major, 3-octave: 10 mins

Rep: Rhapsody in Blue, Porgy & Bess and Crazy for You medleys: 45 mins

Mozart, Requiem, 35 mins
Beethoven, "Romance #2", 30 mins
Total Time: 1 hour, 40 mins

I can hear the noise from the St. Patrick's Day parade outside. I've gone the last two years, but I'm not going this time. I can only hear the same marching bands playing the same Irish (and Scottish??) tunes, see the same mummers and step-dancers so many times.
av8rmike: (violin)
Scales: F major, 3-octave, 10 mins

Rep: Mostly just screwing around with reading excerpts out of the book I bought last week. Stuff like Schumann's "Rhenish" Symphony and the overture to Smetana's Bartered Bride. I also played a little of the Beethoven 8th Symphony and "Light Cavalry Overture". I think I just don't want to practice the Beethoven Romance.
Total Time: around an hour.
av8rmike: (violin)
Scales: G major, 4-octave and arpeggios, 10 mins

Rep: John Williams medley, 20 mins
Tchaikovsky Symphony #6 arrangement, 15 mins

Rep: Beethoven Symphony #8, 20 minutes
Sibelius Symphony #2, 30 minutes
Britten Sea Interlude #4, 10 minutes
Total time: 1 hour, 10 minutes.
With the busy week of rehearsals coming up, this may be the last chance to really work on anything.
av8rmike: (violin)
Scales: D major, 3-octave, arpeggios, sixths, thirds, octaves; 20 minutes.

Rep: Just goofing off tonight seeing if I can play The Lark Ascending, which I picked up at the music store after the lesson. It's not impossible, but there are some tricky rhythms, and then some places where it's easy to sound really nice. I also messed around a little with the opening of the Dvořák concerto.
