Whee, it's December 1st. Only 25 more days of piped-in Christmas music. Thankfully the local classical station hasn't started in with the instrumental arrangements. Maybe that'll be next week.

Also, I'm so glad that the good people at MSN Money Central have enough free time to not only add up the cost of everything in the song "Twelve Days of Christmas" ($18,348.87), but also compare it to last year and to 1984. How, precisely, does one calculate the cost of 10 lords-a-leaping? And did they look for "four calling birds" or "four colly birds", because I'd assume it would make a big difference in the overall cost.

To calculate the cost of lords-a-leaping, you call the hall, talk to the BA, find out the prevailing wage and add their benefits to get the total hourly figure. If your Christmas is open shop, you may opt for non-union lords, but they may not be as proficient in their leaping as a true card-carrying journeyman. Regarding the birds-maybe they're colicky, instead.

It disturbs me to think that someone on the staff may have actually done that.
