An Aside...

Kyla:
Just so you don't think I think you're a hypocrite or anything-- At the luncheon after the funeral yesterday, I had a ham and cheese sandwich. I could have refused, but it was the only thing they served, besides soup and a lot of desserts. I also would have been the only one refusing, and I didn't want to make a big fuss. Hell, even my mother and brother ate them.
Just one more thing I have to atone for, come tonight.

Date: 2005-10-12 07:51 pm (UTC)I have never kept kosher in my life, except for occasional BBYO weekends or camps where it was forced upon me. And after a week of bad kosher food at the BBYO camp, the first thing I and my fellow camp-mates did was stop at a Friendly's for cheeseburgers and milkshakes. So for me, eating a ham & cheese sandwich after yesterday's funeral was nothing. Hell, I had cooked bacon for breakfast only a few hours earlier. And I have seen Mike eat bacon, ribs, cheeseburgers, and shellfish many, many times. Although if he's gone kosher again, more power to him. I don't have that kind of willpower. And my wife is from Mississippi, home of some of the world's best barbeque. I couldn't give up ribs.
I will be fasting tomorrow, but I don't think I'm going to services. I went last year but I was already in the Baltimore/Washington area and I was able to go with Mike to the Johns Hopkins services. I'm not in a congregation here in New York and it's impossible to find a place to go at the last minute. Plus I'm still wiped out from all the driving on Monday and Tuesday, so I can use the day off work to rest and recover. I don't think I'm the world's worst Jew, but if there was a competition I could do well.
