For some reason, I haven't made an entry on a Wednesday since June 22. So here's a few random thoughts/follow-ups:

This was pretty much a no-brainer since yesterday's entry. I had figured that the BSO would name Marin Alsop as the next music director over the musicians' objections, if for no other reason than the notoriety of being the first major American orchestra to name a female music director. The musicians issued a statement saying they were "disappointed", but would continue to present "inspiring performances", etc.

If you can't read the article, there's an interesting factoid I never knew about: In 1972, when Lorin Maazel was named music director of the Cleveland Orchestra without any consultation with the musicians, the resentment was so strong that when Maazel walked out onstage for his first concert, the orchestra refused to stand, as they traditionally do. That must have been a sight to behold.

In a response to one of [info]Kyla's entries, I hate Trunk too, but not for the same reasons. Maybe I'll get mentioned as a "snarker" in the anon community too, now. Anyway, he posted this thread about Sudoku, and well, that's all I need, more ways to waste my time. I admit, though, it's a pretty cool puzzle, and it's made me remember how much I like number/logic games. Here's a good on-line version: WebSudoku.com. You may commence hating me now.

I am told that Trunk is awesome, and that is something on which one cannot front.

Yes, I remember. =P He seemed like he could be nice when he wanted to be, but otherwise, I agree with gobear and Kyla Snarky-pants.

I am going to ignore yet ANOTHER Sudoku taunting. I ain't got no more time! I'm completely hooked on crosswords again, I have to keep reading, I have a Netflix account, I have to keep running and working 2 jobs.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I need to inherit millions, I believe.

That's why I'm glad you took the puzzle books off my hands: I think I'm just not wired for crosswords. The clues make no sense to me. But logic stuff, I'll all about that.

Maybe it's an obvious point, but I think Alsop would never have reached the fame and success that she has if she WASN'T a woman. I mean, that whole female power thing that the BSO advertised when she and hilary hahn were both performing seemed kind of silly to me. Music is music regardless of gender, and if she doesn't do a good job, it will only delay the prominence of women conductors.

True enough. The more publicity I hear about this, the more I agree with my friend Dan's comments in Tuesday's entry. Saying she's one of the "top female conductors" is quite the back-handed compliment, like they're saying "she's pretty good... you know, for a girl." The reasons I'd read for the musicians' disapproval of Alsop sound like they could be equally likely for either gender of conductor, and definitely don't give me much hope for the coming seasons. However, it won't keep me from subscribing... *shrug*
