I think I've finally broken through a sort of "glass ceiling" with respect to my lessons. My teacher and I worked on lots of scales, études, and exercises for months on end and I was getting kind of frustrated. Then she went away to Europe for almost a month, while I was working on the Nutcracker. For the last 3 weeks after my last concert, we've been working on my orchestra music. I asked her about repertoire stuff and she said she's been wanting to get me started on some of the J.S. Bach Partitas for solo violin, which are a definite "standard" for violin students. Last night she brought in her copy of (parts of) the D minor partita. So I'm pretty excited about being done with études and stuff, at least temporarily.

I'm also looking forward to the weekend. Tomorrow is the art-lover AVAM Dopefest, which could have up to 20 people attending, including myself and Dayna. I don't know what else we've got planned to do, though.

I've felt pretty brain-dead all week, especially in the evenings. Tuesday's rehearsal didn't matter all that much, but it took me a while to get into my lesson and Monday night's. I told Katie (my stand partner) that I think I've been drinking too much caffeine, so I'm drinking Earl Grey tea this morning. Let's see if Alton Brown's claim that it provides a gentler lift than coffee pans out.

I'm considering adding a cello to my pit. I have to check to see if the fifths I need in one song are possible.

So take heart. This is the first step towards me scoring for a full string section.
