Home Sick

Sorry for no more recent updates... I stayed home from work today because I had a terribly sore throat from last night and Dayna thought it might have been strep. I think it's just a cold, since I'm all congested now, but it felt worse this morning. So I'm downing lozenges and OJ and anything else I can get my hands on in the meantime. The worst part? I realized that, instead of sleeping in, I could have been watching my DVDs of "Return of the King." I guess there's still time.

So, about before: Sunday night Dayna and I were coming back from a restaurant in Towson, when Northern Parkway became a total sheet of ice. I was in 4WD mode, but it doesn't really help. Up ahead, I see a car that appeared to have spun out, since he was in the road sideways. I tried to avoid him, but we slid on the ice and I hit the back quarter of his car, pushing him partially up onto the sidewalk. I wisely pulled into the cross street and out of the roadway. The poor guy seemed very confused, as he had a thick African accent and may not have been aware of what he was supposed to do. Thank G-d none of us were hurt, but my truck had some bumper and fender damage. So we both get on our respective phones trying to call people. Eventually the guy's uncle shows up and parks in the road next to the first car. Sure enough, 20 minutes later, while I'm on the phone with a towing company, another car comes up behind, hits the uncle's car and pushes him into the first car. Then two other cars behind them hit each other while trying to avoid the mess. I must have sounded like the "oh the humanity!" guy while on the phone, telling him he needed to bring more trucks. The police finally showed up, closed the road at a nearby stoplight, and told me I could leave since my car was drivable and we'd already exchanged the necessary information.

I made it to the adjuster's office yesterday. The estimate? $1200, mostly parts and body work. Can I cancel Giftmas?

Suckity suck suck SUCK, Mike. My family is always okay with people bailing on gift-giving when something like this happens. I vote Giftmas CANCELED for you.

I'm glad everyone involved is okay.

THAT SUCKS.

You're Jewish. Did you forget? You don't celebrate Giftmas. You get Eight Crazy Nights instead.

Yeah, but our family has usually done some sort of gift-opening Christmas day, depending on who's home and whatever. I have no idea what my plans are this year.

Oy vey.

I've never heard of the upcoming holiday referred to as Giftmas. My friend James suggested last night that by giving gifts, I'm being conformist, and that Hanukkah was all about being non-conformist. As in the Jews refused to do what the Syrians wanted and fought back. So you can always tell people that you didn't give gifts because you were caught up in the true spirit of Hanukkah, aside from your other troubles.

I think I first heard it called Giftmas in the journal writings of [livejournal.com profile] jinwicked, but you won't find it in there now, as it's no longer a personal journal.

Sorry, Mike -- that blows! And in this case, yes, definitely cancel Giftmas. I'm sure everyone would totally understand. Ow.
