More Concert Stuff
Oct. 25th, 2004 08:52 amI keep forgetting to update from the past week... =( Thursday night we had a dress rehearsal in Columbia, which got started later for me since the violins didn't have to be there until after 8:00. That's because the Hindemith piece, "Der Schwanendreher", doesn't have a violin or viola part (except for the solo). It was a little rocky and didn't end until late, and I didn't get back home until almost 11:30. I just went straight to bed. Friday night I wasn't sure about going out, but I decided to go anyway to the school's Shabbat dinner. 'Nuff already said.
Mom came to visit for the weekend on Saturday, and we meant to go check out the Peabody Library, but they have a very weird visitor policy, as it apparently isn't a true "public" library. We killed a little too much time and were pretty behind schedule getting to Columbia, but I got onstage when I needed to be. The concert went amazingly well, not that I had much doubt.
Sunday's was pretty much the same, except that concert was in the middle of the afternoon. Mom & I got lunch in the neighborhood (and planned out the schedule a little better so we wouldn't have to rush). In fact, I got to the church really early, only to discover the second violins arranged right on the edge of the pulpit. The firsts were about 5 feet away, in front of the first row of pews. I had to play well because I was so exposed*. That concert went off really well too, much better than last week's. My dad and stepmother came up for that one as well, and I think they really enjoyed it too.
Fortunately, it looks like none of the other schedules combine like this. The next BPO concert is the first 2 weeks of December, and Columbia's next isn't until January. I decided not to play the children's concert because there's only two rehearsals. I also need some time to prepare for the Nutcracker next month.
*- Oh, the resolution of the seating questions: I talked to the BPO manager at last week's rehearsal, who completely backed me up and told me I could continue to sit principal and get billing for it. The whole mission of the orchestra was such that they didn't hire professionals to push aside the amateurs at concert time. So, go me! =)
