Update from Tuesday
Oct. 8th, 2004 02:22 pmYup, definitely in over my head, or close to it. Tuesday's BPO rehearsal was again sparsely populated. I was told that the relief players usually start showing up 2 weeks before the concert. Maybe they meant two weeks before the second concert, because nobody new was there Tuesday. So the concertmaster claps me on the back and says, "Congratulations, you're playing principal [second violin]!" It's not that big a surprise, given how few people are playing in the section and that my one stand partner hasn't been there since the second rehearsal. The concertmaster told me that the seconds has always been a weak section, and how good it is to have someone there who "plays with some fire and energy." My teacher even told me that it was a great compliment, despite my assertion that I was using the energy to make up for what I was lacking in accuracy. She told me I was being too hard on myself and just do the best I can. She also said it wasn't a bad decision to take the Nutcracker gig in December.
Tonight I'm going to dinner at the home of some college friends I haven't seen in at least a year and a half. I was supposed to bring dessert, but I'm going to have to go cheap and buy something at the store. Trouble is, they keep Kosher and I don't know what we're having for dinner. I'll try calling a bit later.
