Perl kicks ass because 75% of your code is already written for you. You just have to find the right modules.

I was trying not to use a whole lot of extra modules, since I really wanted to find out how to do a lot of the basics myself.
One thing I was complaining to afuna about before: the Perl docs for regexs (even perlretut) is confusing and hard to search. The regex docs and tutorials for Python are a joy in comparison.

Do it right:

$perl =~ %fun%

Any tersely written perl program can be reduced to something resembling line noise. It's a good write-only language.
