So, the new profile pages have gone live, if you weren't paying attention. Let's see how the design process went:

  • First beta announcement in [livejournal.com profile] lj_design: ~650 comments, mostly helpful feedback.
  • Round 2 of the testing process: ~750 comments, mostly helpful feedback.
  • Final Round of the testing process: ~500 comments, mostly helpful feedback.
  • Announcement that the profile goes live: 4,800+ comments, all of them bitching and wailing that there was no announcement, no testing, "OMG YOU SUCK, LJ!", "DO NOT WANT", etc.

GOOD GOD, PEOPLE. It's ONE page. Now there's evidently a petition. Because those always work so well. Maybe there should be a Facebook group, too.
Speaking of whom, Facebook, Hotmail, and Yahoo! all change their sites, and I'm sure they don't give a crap how many people bitch about it. Why do LJ users believe NOTHING SHOULD EVER EVER CHANGE?

There is a petition, and a community to [livejournal.com profile] changeitback and all sorts of stuff.

I personally don't like it, but I'm not to the DO NOT WANT stage just yet. They put up a new post in the design thing asking for WHAT is wrong and so I left a comment specifying why I didn't like it.

With Picture! (http://community.livejournal.com/lj_design/17908.html?thread=4781556#t4781556)

The other thing? They said they were going to talk about userpics and then they did not! :( I'm sure if they had upped the pics and stuff it would've soften'd the blow that this thing made.

Good for you for leaving a constructive (and illustrative) comment. I sincerely hope it isn't lost with the rest of the chaff.

Again, I don't know anything about the userpic thing.

I'm really not seeing why people are so against it. If they could post useful comments that outlined what their issues were, perhaps LJ could fix them or offer suggestions, but all the super-gigantic-bold screaming complaints with no content really doesn't help much does it? Oof.

Also amused by the folk saying that x% of users hate the new page, and cite that as a reason to fix it. Uhm... where are they getting these stats? I have a really hard time believeing that. They may THINK that a certain number of comments means a certain percentage of users, but I'd like to see the cold numbers before I believe any of that dreck.
Pfft.

It's the same issue it always is: people here hate change, for some reason, and think that those who scream the loudest will have an effect. One thing a lot of people cite is the stats that used to be "below the fold" in the original version are now at the top of the page. The information was always there, and is no less public than it was before, but people regard it like it's some kind of invasion of privacy.

that, and what people are calling "line breaks" which are actually horizontal rules.

Really now, if you're going to bitch design, at least use the right words.

man, I liked crystal pepsi.

at least, I liked it as much as I like any soda, which isn't much.

In case you were curious...

This morning I decided to do the numbers. This was around 11:00am Eastern.

As of today, 1,880,805 active accounts exist on LiveJournal. If every comment on the the lj-design post about the profile update were a unique user* it would calculate to approximately .25% of active users.

4765 / 1,880,805 = 0.00253348965

*since I myself am partaking in a few threaded discussions with other users within the comments of that post, I know for a fact that all comments are not from unique users, but I feel that this knowledge further assists in making my point
