Study: One in Four Americans Doesn't Read

Apparently, this article is today's source of ire and disdain. While I can't say I read no books last year, the actual number couldn't have been more than one or two. I just don't see where people get that kind of time. I hear about or see lots of books and think, "that seems like it'd be interesting," but never so much that I'll rush home to start reading it. Of course, my time management has never been all that great, either. Maybe it's true that the Internet makes you stupid. I hope I haven't made [livejournal.com profile] gingy or [livejournal.com profile] bristlesage too crabby or amazed.

I'll bring up the average for you.

You do other things, too, like play the viomalin that I think are just as edifying as reading. But I'm sure that's not the case for many of these people, you know? That's the amazing part.

True, but I don't think I can keep using music as the excuse for bad time management when there are probably many other things I can cut out that take up more time.

There was a time right after college where I didn't read much. I didn't have books in my apartment, and I just wasn't in the habit. I was watching TV (which I now don't do), renting movies (which I still do through Netflix) and drinking way too much with a bad boyfriend (which obviously I don't do now either). There wasn't much time for reading, and no one around me ever mentioned books.

I don't know what got me back into it, but now it's just insane how much I read. But I can see how easy it could be to slip out of the habit. Particularly when you bring in children to the equation. If I had kids to take care of, would I have as much time to sit and read? Absolutely not. (Hopefully I'd at least spend time reading with/to them, but still.)

*nods* So, you cut out the TV watching and drinking. There's still plenty of time to get back to drinking too much, albeit this time with a good boyfriend!

True, but after having 2 glasses of wine on Friday night and feeling like crap the next morning at the gym, I'd say that's not in the cards.

TV steadily lost its appeal over time. A good book has always left me with more lasting satisfaction than a few hours of laugh-track accompanied crappola.

I don't watch much of that kind of TV either, but I do like my Food Network, Mythbusters, LOST, and a few other "quality" programming.

I used to be a voracious reader, back before I had a life. I could read uninterrupted for hours. As a result, I can't enjoy reading in small bursts, unless it's a book of short stories or some such. It seems the only time I read an entire book is when I have to travel for work. I lock myself in my hotel room and enjoy the uninterrupted bliss of reading without critters or spouse or phone or chores breaking my stride.

Maybe after I retire??
