It was a long an exhausting day on Saturday, but in the end, lots of fun. I could have gone out Friday night to another Shabbat service at Beth Am, but I was expecting to have people over Saturday evening and wanted to clean up the place. Anyway, Saturday afternoon there were two performances in Columbia of the Young Peoples' concert. If I didn't mention it before, on the programs were Kleinsinger's Tubby the Tuba, complete with narration, and Deems Taylor's suite Through the Looking Glass, presented in conjunction with the Peabody Prep Dance Ensemble. Musically, it was an interesting and adventurous program, although I have to wonder if it was able to get and keep kids' attention. Jason has a way of keeping things interesting. We all nearly cracked up at his different ad-libbed voices and accents. While playing the role of "Signor Pizzicato" in Tubby, he was somewhere between a Slavic accent and a Scottish brogue. I guess that's what makes playing childrens concerts so much fun.

Between the two shows was the "musical instrument petting zoo", where kids can play from a selection of instruments from the different families. I didn't get away for lunch in time, and got sucked into helping with the kids. So by the time the second show was over, I was thirsty, hungry, and had a major headache from all the music in that booming room. I went home, changed clothes, ate a little, took some Advil, and found out that Katie & Eric would meet us at the restaurant, and R. was running late. We were meeting at the Rocky Run in Charles Village and then heading over to the Hopkins Orchestra concert.

Once we finally got to the same place at the same time, we all had a lovely evening. We all got along well at dinner, made it to the concert in plenty of time, and got really good (if tight) seats. The performance was good, but a little uneven. Even Jonathan Carney, the soloist, didn't seem to be at the top of his game, but the Brahms Violin Concerto is a challenge to anyone. Everyone said they had a really nice time, so schedules permitting, maybe we'll be able to do it again sometime.
