av8rmike: Sign from railroad yard: DO NOT HUMP (hump)

I can't complain about getting a 4-day weekend, especially when I get to do fun stuff. My dad's cousin has been in town, staying with my dad, for the last week or so. Gibson is definitely an interesting character, as he's in his mid-60s and this is his first visit to the U.S. at all (he's from London). I guess people had been telling him we're all rude, or have guns, or that we eat strange stuff or something, and he's stayed away for the whole time. Somehow, he & my dad got in contact, and Dad invited him over for a visit. Gibson is a major train enthusiast, so getting to see his favorite kinds of engines and rolling stock was the big selling point for the visit. Tuesday and Wednesday he, Dad, and my stepmother went to Viriginia to see some transportation museum in Roanoke. Thursday and Friday he & Dad were going to Lancaster & Scranton, PA and invited me along.

Thursday was the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum, about a hour or so drive from Baltimore. Gibson took off and went around to see the parts of the museum he wanted to see by himself, and left my dad and I to wander on our own. Unfortunately, it was dark inside the museum, so most of my picture are harder to see. I should have gotten a few pictures of the motel that was made up of dozen of cabooses (cabese?). That was pretty neat looking. Then we drove the rest of the way up to Scranton, which took another two hours, mostly because there aren't any good routes from Lancaster to there.

Friday was Steamtown, U.S.A., which just wasn't as good as the museum the day before. A lot of the steam engines were cool, but too many of the railroad cars were just left outside to rust or rot away, even the Big Boy (see below). The big turntable was cool, as was the engine shop. That night, we drove the 3+ hours back to Maryland.

I have more I have to write, but it's getting late. Enjoy some pictures:

A 4-6-0 steam engine.

A really neat "Shay"-type geared steam locomotive.

The "Big Boy" massive freaking locomotive.

Myself, in front of the previous.
