If you make a LiveJournal community, is it too much to ask to actually moderate it?? Several times now, I've seen posts made in error that were never deleted, and just over the weekend, there was a huge argument in [livejournal.com profile] aviation. Someone started arguing with a 17-year-old over communism and whatnot, going on for about 20 posts, and no one stepped in to shut them up. Maybe I'm just used to the way things are done on the 'Dope.

I guess it depends on the person. I bet there are a lot of people who feel that their job is simply to bring up new topics and keep things moving. There are a lot of people, too, who feel that any moderation of their posts* is an act of censorship, though they'd be wrong.

*but the posts of other people can be moderated...

What about when the "moderators" are simply absent? I think some of these people just make a community, then lose interest or forget about it, and the place turns into the Wild Wild West. (gunshot)

Oh yeah, that happens far too often. You could email the moderators, but if you're not offering to take over, then I'd think they'd ignore you...

I get pissy about this same thing on the Cooking Light messageboard. I honestly think that as much as people complain about the mods at SDMB, it really makes a difference. At the CLBB, these women (because they mostly are, not too many men posting there) are the cattiest, snarkiest bitches and bring the drama BIG TIME. And there's no one there to recommend they SHUT THE FUCK UP or to lock a huge trainwreck.

Yeah, especially when there are a lot of members, it can get out of hand really easily. There were two Atlanta LJ communities, and the maintainer of one deleted it because he felt it was redundant, only to bring it back a short while later because the other one was unmoderated and got completely out of control around the election. Man, that was ugly.
