The rehearsals where the concertmistress isn't there are always fun, because I get to play out and be the only first violinist who knows what's going on. The rehearsals where I then get to play the cadenza and solo from Offenbach's "Orpheus in the Underworld" Overture (and actually do pretty well), now those are just awesome.

Orpheus is a great piece. Sudden flashback as I went to type this: In high school, the band director had a sign on his office door with a clock face and movable hands. Above the clock, it read: Bach at, and below, it read: Offenbach sooner. :D

Ah, Orpheus...good, fluffy fun all around. :-)

Reminds me of a wacky conductor I had in high school who emoted so much throughout the solo part, I nearly cracked up and missed the high B.
