Where were you when...
Apr. 2nd, 2004 06:18 pm1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
My parents were just in college.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
Umm.. not even 3 years old.
3. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
I recall my brother and I having stayed home from school because there had been a big snowstorm. We were watching the launch on TV when it happened.
4. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
Beats me.
5. When the Berlin Wall fell (11/7/1989)
Probably watching it on TV.
6. When the Gulf War began (1/16/1991)
My brother and I were going to a youth group meeting at a friend's house. We spent most of the night watching TV and not doing anything relating to our group's business. As if it mattered.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
My cousin Andrew was getting married in Alabama that day. If I recall correctly, we watched part of the coverage while getting changed for the ceremony. After the reception and everything, my brother, Andrew's brother, and I sat in Andrew's apartment polishing off some leftover champagne and waiting to see how things would turn out.
8. When the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
Well, a senior in high school. Nothing more specific than that.
9. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
Sophomore year in college. I recall that there was a party at my fraternity that night, and I left to walk home the girl who'd become my girlfriend for that semester. I came back and Jason, one of my housemates, was watching TV and told me what happened.
10. When Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold opened fire on their classmates at Columbine High School (4/20/1999)
Senior year in college. Mom called me sometime that day to say how mystified she was, but you know, it's the college bubble. Nothing really seems to sink in.
11. When Bush was first announced President (11/7/2000)
Who cares??
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
The what now?
13. When terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center. (9/11/2001)
At work (the same job I have now). Mark, one of my co-workers, said something about a plane hitting the building, and I immediately thought of the WWII-era bomber hitting the Empire State Building in 1947(?). All the news websites were slow to load, but a few co-workers had radios, so everyone was reporting the wild reports circulating. One of my co-workers had a TV with poor reception, which we watched soon enough to watch the buildings collapse. Around lunchtime I drove home (I lived pretty close) to get my radio, which picks up air and public service frequencies. By the time I got back, though, all the excitement was over and there was nothing left happening, just aftermath.
