Everyone's talking retail therapy these days

...And by "everyone", I mean "at least two people other than myself".

I want a laptop, for some reason. It's not because I'm a grad student and need to spend all my waking hours in a Panera or Starbucks (Hi [livejournal.com profile] helenseidolon!) Everyone has one these days, even my dad. He uses it while sitting in front of the TV, but that's because his desktop computer is 30 feet away in another corner of the house. And have you seen these widescreen HP models? They are beautiful.

Problem is, I really don't need one. It would serve more as a desktop replacement, but my existing desktop still works reasonably well, and is right next to my TV. Even with the discounts, it's still not an insignificant chunk of change. I guess I'll have to stick to spending my money on smaller things like CDs and concert tickets.

You need a MacBook. ;)

And you told me that you thought $750 was a lot of money to spend. =P

No, I said that I thought $1000 was more than *you* wanted to spend.... ;)

Ha! It's true, I am a laptop addict. The luxury of surfing in bed is amazing.

Oh, yeah, and work. That.

What about Panera? For a while there, I was pretty sure you lived at one.

I did, actually. Well, you had it right, I spent about 75% of my time in Panera or Starbucks.

I've been having an off year. Any day now I'll be back to working every waking hour, when my advisor figures out I haven't actually been working on my dissertation.

You could always get a netbook and install OS X on it:

Or you could hack it to run the Linux distro of your choice, or Windows XP. You'd save a ton of money and you'd still have a mobile computer to play with at Dad's or when you're traveling. It might be hard to watch movies on it, though.

We have mine to watch movies on...if he's out here, at least....

Actually, that entry was posted in a friend's journal too, which I had read before I saw your comment. While the idea of a $300 computer has its appeals, it doesn't make much sense to buy something that's less than what I own now, which is already 4-5 years old.

Decide what you really need/want, and send me an email. My buddy is a Dell reseller and will configure whatever you want.
