One of Us

I think it may be time for me to start drinking the Google™ Kool-Aid™.

EDIT: That is to say, GMail? Or re-activate my ancient Yahoo! mail account?

Gmail all the way. Once you try it you'll wonder how you lived without it. I can't believe you've stuck with Hotmail all this time. What happened?

? Hotmail has been fine. It's the Earthlink mail I'd be replacing, because it's all but useless at this point.

I don't care for Gmail, but I'm a loooongtime Yahoo user, so I'm not the best audience, I bet.

Would you mind elaborating on what you did and didn't like about each?

Heh, not at all, though I really don't think I'm a lot of help here. Basically, I don't need all the bells-and-whistles that GMail offers; I don't send large files, so the gig of space that Yahoo offers is enough for me; I don't like Gmail's privacy policies very much (and truthfully, I need to do more research on this one); I already had a Yahoo account. That'd be about it.

I have both (actually, I have 3 or 4 GMail accounts.)

GMail has a cleaner interface, and I like how it threads LJ comment notifications. Yahoo lets you create actual folders for different senders, but GMail only lets you label mail.

GMail loads faster.

Earthlink not behaving?

I'm assuming you don't want to switch to your Hotmail account though....

My thoughts: I myself tend to prefer Gmail over Yahoo! mail, but there are of course pros and cons to both.

Gmail pros: smoother interface, faster loading, more reliable spam catching, larger attachment capability. Gmail cons: I'm not so sure about the privacy stuff. I've only heard bits and pieces about it, so you might want to research this more. Also, you can't create storage folders; you have to use tags and "archive" them instead, which is kind of annoying.

Yahoo! mail pros: eh, it works. Can create folders for storage, and that's its biggest pro over Gmail in my opinion. I guess that's really about it. Yahoo! mail cons: not as great at catching spam. Too many ads compared to Gmail. Interface not as nice to use as Gmail.

Yahoo! mail does have a new Beta, but of course it doesn't support Mac's Safari browser, so I can't tell you anything about it.

Just my thoughts on the matter. My backup account is my Gmail account, and I have one set up for spamcatching sign-up type things as well.

I have become a huge fan of Gmail's label feature. I like having the ability to label a message "friends" and "orchestra" for example. Then I can find the message under either label. I use Lotus Notes at work, and when I want to put a message in a folder, I have to choose the best one that fits the subject, even if it would make sense to go in more than one folder. I don't really care about the privacy issues with Gmail. I think it's funny to see the ads that come up when I read my mail. The best thing about Gmail is that it lets me send and receive mail using my Earthlink address, so I get the best of both worlds. I can keep the address I've used for years, and use Gmail's interface instead of Earthlink's.
